The Wedding Prep Series: First Look With Dad | Colorado Wedding Photographer

In addition to having a First Look between the bride and the groom, it’s also become popular recently to have a First Look between the bride and the father or mother of the bride.  (If you don’t know what a First Look is, check out this blog post for more info).  First Looks with the mother of the bride are a little less common because many mothers prefer to be in on the action, helping their daughters dress for the big wedding day.

However, many fathers don’t see their daughters all dressed up for their wedding ceremony until they’re completely ready, so there’s a wonderful opportunity to have a moment with dad.  Sometimes, wedding day craziness and the separation that naturally happens between men and women getting dressed means that dad doesn’t get as much time with the bride.  Of course, there are other wedding day traditions that highlight dad, but seeing you in your wedding gown for the first time can be one of the most emotional moments.  Planning it into the wedding day schedule keeps that moment from being interrupted, hurried, or photobombed.  It also gives dad time to impart words of wisdom, bestow good luck tokens, and hold his baby girl for a moment that’s all his own.  Plus, for those of us with emotional fathers, it gives him the chance to get those tears out so he can smile as he walks down the aisle.

Some brides plan this into their schedule as a surprise for their fathers and others let him know in advance.  I even had a bride include her brothers in the first look—her whole fan club saw her all at once, and they were so great.  However you arrange it, if you’re lucky enough to have a good relationship with your dad, consider giving him a moment for himself.
